Dr Luigi Sposato
Luigi obtained his medical degree at the University of Tasmania. He then went on to complete his surgical training in his home city of Melbourne, Victoria.
After completing his training, he developed skills in Acute General Surgery before advancing into sub-specialty training in the area of Colorectal Surgery, which has been his passion since the infancy of his training.
He has held fellowship positions in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, and The Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, UK. Working in different units including one of the largest colorectal centres in Europe allowed him to focus on developing skills in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery and increase his exposure to more complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Colorectal Cancer cases.
Through his overseas fellowship, he has brought back new ideas for clinical practice, continuing high quality research and teaching. Dr Sposato is very excited and enthusiastic about the future of Colorectal and General surgery. The rapid evolution and application of technology to surgical techniques has enhanced recovery and led to significantly better outcomes. He is currently undergoing further training in robotic surgery.
Luigi returned to Australia in 2018 to take up a position with the Colorectal Unit at Flinders Medical Centre. Part of his decision to return to Adelaide involved The Medical Centre’s strong affiliation with the University’s Medical School, which has enabled him to continue his interests in teaching and research.
Luigi is also fluent in Italian and has always had a passion to service the Italian community.
